Meet the 2008-2009 Dakota Combo! This is the third year of Minnesota’s premier High School combo The Dakota Combo. With generous support from the Dakota Foundation for Jazz Education, this group will perform at the Dakota with Irvin Mayfield on December 6, 2008. Under the direction of jazz artist Kelly Rossum, the 2-hour rehearsals (Thursdays from 8:00pm 10:00pm, every other week) will be held at MacPhail Center for Music. The program will continue through both semesters of the 2008-2009 school year. The fall concert, with special guest Irvin Mayfield, will be at the Dakota Jazz Club on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 8:00pm. There will also be a clinic with Irvin Mayfield and the Dakota Combo that morning at 10:30am, at the Dakota Jazz Club (FREE and open to the public). Read a special article written by Andrea Canter for Jazz Police. The Dakota Combo will be performing at this year’s MMEA Conference on Friday, February 13, 2009. The group will also tour area schools on February 18, 2009. The spring concert will be at MacPhail Center for Music’s Antonello Hall on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 8:00pm (FREE admission). Selection for this jazz combo was based entirely on audition. Featured Artist for 2008-2009: Irvin Mayfield ![]() Irvin Mayfield has quickly established himself as one of the most decorated and recorded Jazz musicians of his generation. Mayfield is a versatile trumpeter, bandleader, composer and arranger, recording artist, a passionate spokesman for the rich history and cultural significance of Jazz and the city that birthed it. ![]() Kelly Rossum has presented music master classes throughout the United States as well as in Europe and Asia. Kelly is the Jazz Coordinator and trumpet instructor at MacPhail Center for Music. |
